Install z/OS on Hercules

Dear All,

I have installed and run MVS38J on my windows machine running Hercules. I would like to find out where can I download a z/OS version and how can I obtain free license or at least demo license.

Moreover, have anyone done installation of z/OS on Hercules? Does it have ISPF and TSO/E capabilities? Is there a windows emulation version of the HMC for Management of Hercules?

Neither thing is available. Your choices are:

1. US$4000/yr for ADCD.

2. Bootlegged ADCD from emule etc.

3. There has been progress on MVS 3.8j as a
programming environment, depending on what you
are after.

Yes, all of that has been done and is available if
you bootleg it.

No idea about that one.

Yes, z/OS can run under hercules. Yes, it has ISPF and TSO/E.
Look here: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/resources/swprice/
for license information and pricing. It's not cheap and it may also
require IBM approved hardware.

Hello!
This stops as of tomorrow Morning, 9AM GMT.

Z/OS running via Hercules isn't an accepted option as far as IBM is
concerned. In fact the mere mention of the fact makes all of them want to
hide.

Currently the only accepted option is indeed IBM accepted hardware. Complete
with pricing and hardware requirements as appropriate.

There was an interesting discussion on a related issue on the L-390 list,
and it was tabled after we realized that the resident IBM specialists were
getting rather unhappy.

Please ask off-list as to why the subject/thread is closed if anyone is
curious.

The cheapest LEGAL way is:

1) Become an IBM certified ISV;

2) Buy an IBM zPDT emulator;

3) Buy an ADCD z/OS package;

4) Run it on Hercules as a disaster recovery test.

The minimum cost to get zPDT is:

$ 3,750,00 (per year - the cheapest version for 1090-L01)
$ 299,00 for USB key (1090)
$ 900,00 for ADCD z/OS
$ 0,00 for z/VM 5.4 Startup
$ 4,949,00 Total

I tried step 4 on behalf of a friend of mine who owns a FLEX-ES to verify the feasibility of making Hercules a disaster recovery machine; everything worked fine; then I cancelled every trace of that illegal OS from my PC ;-)

Now I run only legal OS, like OS/360, DOS/360 ,TOS/360, TSS/360 and CP/67.

To manage Hercules remotely I use VPN and a remote access software (Radmin). It should have a web server but I never tried it.

Then why did you less than a week ago post the following

in http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/hercules-390/message/59153

Hi all,
The IPL command in a 370 mode guest of VM/ESA 2.4 doesn't work.
Any kind of IPL (from dasd-tape-reader) gives the same message; for example IPL
from an empty card reader:

VM/ESA is not one of the "legal" ones you listed.

P.S. Care to share your copy of CP/67 and the hercules mods required for running it?

I think you'll find that was a joke, and that he was
just listing the legal OSes so that the original
poster knew what the scope was.

If it's not already available, it's very unlikely he
has that either.

I was surprised that he cited old versions of MVS
and DOS, and missed out VM/370 (and 380), which will
may confuse the original poster, who may think he
needs to go back older than necessary. But I think
the joke was more for regular readers than the
original poster. The whole story about "testing
disaster recovery and deleting all trace" is part
of that joke.

I remember someone telling me that he had backups
of his friend's C64 disks, and from time to time
he would pull them out to make sure the backup
still worked.

Anyway, the point is that telling a subtle joke is
not hypocrisy. And I believe debates about running
possibly-illegal software are off-topic here, and
in either case, no-one here is IBM's enforcer. :-)

Laddie,Paul,

of course it was a joke: I was amused to see a question about the possibility that IBM could give free licenses of z/OS when there are hundredths of posts excluding that for the past, the present and the future.
The citation of CP/67 instead of VM/370 as well as of OS/360 instead of MVS was to enforce the 'legality' of the OSes I used; as Paul correctly deduced I haven't neither CP/67 nor the Hercules mods needed to run it.
I was very displeased to have been charged of hypocrisy, a 'crime' that in some countries (luckily not in Italy) is punished with death.

Regards.
